sonnennächster Stern (Entfernung von der Sonne 4,25 Lichtjahre), gehört zum Mehrfachsystem Alpha Centauri, dem Hauptstern im Sternbild Kentaur. Proxima Centauri ist ein Flackerstern (Flare-Sterne); seine scheinbare visuelle Helligkeit beträgt 11m,3 und variiert mit einer Periode von 41,6 Tagen um 0,01 mag. Mit einer absoluten Helligkeit von +15m gehört er zu den leuchtkraftschwächsten der bekannten Sterne. Er ist ein roter Zwergstern der Spektralklasse M 5. - Entdeckt wurde Proxima Centauri (auch Centauri C genannt) 1915 von dem Direktor des Observatoriums in Johannesburg, Robert Thorburn Ayton Innes (* 1861, ✝ 1933).
